Facts about chronic wasting syndrome
Chronic wasting
syndrome is a chronic wasting disease that was first found in the
mule deer in the year 1967. This disease belongs to the transmissible
spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). This disease is characterized
by the degeneration of the brain which leads to the death of the
animal. Initially this disease leads to the loss of body condition
and a change in the behavior that is abnormal and eventually it
leads to the death. The way that this disease is spread is not known.
The agent that causes this disease may be passed by the infected
animals in feces, urine or the saliva. Crowded areas of the elk
and deer may be the place where this disease spreads. It is understood
that chronic wasting disease is spread from one animal to another.
The chronic wasting disease is always progressive and is always
fatal.
Weight loss
over a period of time is a clinical sign of the chronic wasting
disease in the animal. Decrease interaction with other animals is
found as one of the behavioral changes that occurs as a result of
the infection of the chronic wasting disease. Lowering of the head,
blank facial expressions, repetitive walking in set patterns, and
abnormal positions of the head are some of the physical symptoms
of the chronic wasting disease. Excessive salivation is also found
in the animal. Grinding of the teeth unnecessarily is also one of
the symptoms of the chronic wasting disease. Most of the animals
show increase drinking and urination. Researches are still going
on for the proper diagnosis of the chronic wasting disease.
