An overview to herpes simplex transmission
Two different
strains of the virus herpes simplex are available. One is called
the HSV-1 and the other is called the HSV-2. Both these viruses
are contagious and they spread through contacts easily. Direct contact
with open lesion should be avoided to reduce the risk of infections.
If you have cold sores and if you kiss someone there is every chance
for the virus to spread to the person being kissed. If you have
genital herpes and if you have sexual contact with your partner,
the virus would spread to your partner. Hence having sex with a
person with herpes infection is not advised. It is possible for
your partner to have genital herpes if you have cold sores and have
oral sex with your partner.
Going for safer
sex with the use of condoms may reduce the risk of infections. It
is always advisable to abstain from sex if you are having herpes
infection. In
women if they are found to have herpes simplex infection a normal
delivery would have the risk of passing the herpes simplex virus
to the new born. Hence a C-section is recommended for such pregnant
women. Women who are pregnant should always check with the doctor,
whether they have herpes infection or not before delivery. It should
be noted that babies cannot fight off infections very easily like
adults. Hence a person who is having cold sores should not kiss
a baby to avoid spreading of herpes to that baby.
A person who
is having active lesions should avoid contact with children who
have eczema or immune compromised individuals, since these people
are at higher risk of contracting the herpes simplex virus infections.
If you have the herpes simplex virus in you and even if you dont
have any symptoms of its presence there is a possibility for you
to spread the virus to others through contacts. This method is known
as Asymptomatic Transmission. This type of asymptomatic transmission
is found higher in the case of genital herpes. Some people may have
genital herpes without any symptoms in them. But they shed the virus
to others when they have sexual contact with others. Some people
touch the lesions and without washing their hands they touch the
other parts of their body and thus the virus spread to other parts
of the body.
