Athlete's foot is a very common fungal infection. It affects mostly men and young people attacking the area between the toes, soles of feet fingernails and toenails. This infection is caused by a fungus called tinea pedis. It lives off the dead skin cells, and thrives in moist, warm places, such as gyms, locker rooms, and swimming pools. The fungus is very contagious and is transmitted by coming into contact with wet floors, or by touching infected shoes or socks. Our skin is constantly being shed, little bits dropping off all the time. If the dead skin is infected with the athlete’s foot fungus and someone else walks along the area where this dead skin is, it could stick to their feet and consequently infect the person with the fungus.

Simple Athlete Foot Cure

Athlete foot is a condition caused by a fungus called tinea pedis. This condition occurs in two forms viz., “Mocassin” pattern and “ fissures”. Mocassin pattern is the one in which it develops scaly dry rash on the bottom and sides of feet. Cracks or "fissures" can occur between the toes, sometimes with an accompanied soft white scale. This fungus grows well in between the moist skin between the toes and the skin in the affected area become itchy and red, with white, wet surface. The mode of transmission is found within bathrooms, showers, swimming pools and changing rooms. This condition is more prone in people with excessively sweaty feet. This condition may spread to different parts of body especially to the soles of the feet, toe nails, notably the groin and underarms. Athlete foot should be differentially diagnosed from Jock Itch, Nail Fungus and Paronychia.

As prevention is better than cure, prophylactic measures should be taken for Athlete foot. Practicing good foot hygiene, daily washing of foot with soap and water, wearing moisture absorbing cotton socks, frequent changing of footwear and daily use of talcum powder in the foot may fetch good results in the prevention of the athlete foot. Commonly the fungicidal and fungi static chemicals are used for the treatment of athlete foot, which find difficult to contact the horny layers of the skin. Hence Topical and antifungal drugs should be used in chronic cases. In the mild cases, the feet should be cleaned frequently with soap and water and the areas around the toes should be dried thoroughly and then apply dusting foot powder in the foot and also in shoes and hose. If there is no response to the proper foot care and hygiene within 15 days, consult a podiatrist who will help to treat the condition specifically and systematically.
