Athlete's foot is a very common fungal infection. It affects mostly men and young people attacking the area between the toes, soles of feet fingernails and toenails. This infection is caused by a fungus called tinea pedis. It lives off the dead skin cells, and thrives in moist, warm places, such as gyms, locker rooms, and swimming pools. The fungus is very contagious and is transmitted by coming into contact with wet floors, or by touching infected shoes or socks. Our skin is constantly being shed, little bits dropping off all the time. If the dead skin is infected with the athlete’s foot fungus and someone else walks along the area where this dead skin is, it could stick to their feet and consequently infect the person with the fungus.

Athletes Foot Remedy - An Overview
The infection
was common among the athletes since they are using the swimming
pools, locker rooms and showers frequently during their practice.
These areas are the breeding grounds for the fungus taenia pedis
which causes this condition. This condition may spread from one
person to another when they are sharing the bed sheets, clothes,
socks and shoes. The affected persons evince pain in the foot with
crevices in the heel. In acute cases, there will be reddening and
pruritis in between the toes with oozing of serous fluid. This condition
should be differentially diagnosed from eczema and psoriasis. Potassium
hydroxide test helps to diagnose the athletes foot. The skin
scrapings are treated with KOH and heated in the flame for dissolving
the certain substances in the tissue sample and making it possible
to see the fungi under microscope clearly. A dermatologist will
perform this test and also physically examine the foot for confirmative
diagnosis.
A cinnamon footbath is prepared to eliminate the presence of fungi
in the athlete foot condition. The footbath is prepared by heating
4 cups of water up to 100 degrees and adds 8 to 10 broken cinnamon
sticks. Reduce the heat and maintain the low heat for 5 minutes.
Keep it for at least 45 minutes or the bath becomes lukewarm. Soak
the feet in the footbath for 5 minutes daily for one week. Powder
containing golden seal, tea tree oil and calendula cream are some
of the herbal preparations used to heal the athletes foot
condition. The prognosis of this condition is guarded. The athletes
foot condition should be treated continuously for 10 days even after
complete cure in order to avoid recurrence of the condition. The
precautionary measures such as using bath shoes in the common bathrooms,
wearing disinfected white cotton socks, avoiding tight shoes especially
in summer and powdering the talc in the feet after bath will help
to heal the cracked skin.
