Origins Reflexology - An Overview

The history of reflexology is first taught to the students who take up courses and training on reflexology. Any book that deals with reflexology is bound to start with some information on the origins of reflexology. This helps us to know the path that this field has taken during the course of time before we learn what is available at present. There is scriptural evidence the shows that reflexology was practiced in ancient Egypt. But the science of reflexology that is used today was founded by Dr. William Fitzgerald. Dr. William Fitzgerald is an Ear, Nose, and Throat surgeon and is an American. He found that applying pressure on specific areas of the body produced anaesthetizing effect on an organ in the body. Working upon this fact he divided body into different zones and all the zones ended in the feet and the hands. From this reflexology was later developed.

Eunice Ingham a massage therapist worked on the Dr. William Fitzgerald’s zone theory and developed what is known as ‘Reflexology’ today. It was found that applying pressure to the different areas of the hands and the foot had an effect on the zone that was marked by Dr. William Fitzgerald. These points on which pressure is applied is called the reflex points. The reflex points in the feet and the hands correspond to an organ or a gland or a particular part of a body. Eunice Ingham was working on this theory in the 1930’s. What Dr. William Fitzgerald found is called the Zone therapy in the United States in 1913. He divided the body into ten zones and he taught that ‘bioelectrical energy’ flowed from these zones to the ‘reflex points’ on the hands and the feet. This was later developed by Eunice Ingham and is known as ‘Reflexology’ today.
